Planting Corn & Rites of Passage Ceremony

As part of the seasonal celebration of Ce Tochtli (One Rabbit) on the Tonalpohualli (Mexica Calendar), Xochipilli Collective will host a collaboration between Danza Azteca Macuilxochitl and Kalpulli Ayolopaktzin in co-leading a Spring Rites of Passage through a  Corn Planting & Water Blessing. As an intertribal and traditional Mexica-Chichimeca and Danza Azteca community, this gathering will honor the relationship we share as kin in relation to land, seeds, and water, marking the first planting of a milpa on our ceremonial grounds. In welcoming this seasonal cycle of growth, we will unveil Milpa Móvil, our new RV artist residency.

Following the unveiling of Milpa Móvil, Xochipilli Collective will initiate a once-a-year artist residency opportunity in supporting Indigenous and allied artists whose work aligns with our mission. Residents will create work on the land and/or share their knowledge, skills, and cultural practices with the community. Milpa Móvil is designed as a self-sustaining, solar-powered residency, built with sustainability and land stewardship at its core.

This work is made possible through the generous support of Seventh Generation Fund, Anonymous Was A Woman, and Houston Arts Alliance, whose investment supports Indigenous-led, land-based art, cultivation, and community care. We also honor the volunteer labor of the Texas Conservation Corps and the soil donation from Living Earth that helped prepare the land and soil beds.

A film screening of Reflections of Coatlicue, DiverseWorks Performance at MATCH

This performance connects the land with the human reproductive system, exploring life and death's dual roles. Birth, like nature's cycles, is sacred, yet loss—through miscarriage or stillbirth—can create physical and spiritual scars, shaking one's trust in one's role as a life-giver. These scars reflect the earth’s unpredictable disruptions. However, as nature replenishes itself, we can heal by reconnecting with our original mother, the earth. The performance symbolizes this internal struggle and the journey toward regaining trust and self-love through nature's timeless cycle

We are still receiving submissions from vendors. If you're interested in volunteering please fill out this form.
