Milpa Móvil is a mobile, land-rooted artist residency hosted by Xochipilli Collective that centers art, culture, and sustainability through Indigenous ways of knowing. Housed in a solar-powered RV on our land in Houston’s Settegast neighborhood, Milpa Móvil will serves as a living space, creative studio, and gathering site for artists, culture bearers, and knowledge keepers.
The residency is grounded in relationship to land, to community, and to ancestral and contemporary practices. Milpa Móvil is not only a place to make work, but a space to listen, learn, teach, and contribute to collective care.
The Milpa Móvil Artist Residency is open to BIPOC artists, culture bearers, healers, and knowledge keepers, as well as non-Indigenous allies whose practices align with values of reciprocity, respect, and community accountability. While Indigenous artists and educators are centered and curated regularly, the residency welcomes interdisciplinary practices across visual art, performance, storytelling, agriculture, healing arts, and socially engaged work.
Residents will be invited to stay in Milpa Móvil and engage with the land, garden, and community through:
Milpa Móvil is guided by Indigenous frameworks of sustainability, interdependence, and care. We view the residency as a reciprocal exchange where artists bring their practice, and in return are invited into relationship with the land, its history, and the people stewarding it.
Milpa Móvil is part of Xochipilli Collective’s long-term vision to build Indigenous-led cultural infrastructure that supports artists while nurturing land, memory, and future generations. Artist residencies will begin in Summer 2026, following the public unveiling of Milpa Móvil and the establishment of our first milpa.
📌 Open calls and residency details will be announced soon.

This image documents the early stage of Milpa Móvil, when the RV was fully gutted to address water damage and structural issues. Removing damaged materials allowed us to assess the condition of the space and begin necessary repairs, laying the foundation for a safe, sustainable, and intentional living and working environment.
This image shows Milpa Móvil in its rebuilding phase, with new flooring installed and walls repaired as construction continues. This stage reflects our commitment to restoring the RV with care and purpose as it transforms into a solar-powered lodge and artist residency space rooted in culture, sustainability, and community.
